The release of of Kinect last year has been an eye candy to a community of developers to use the devices from it's original intended uses. Kinect was originally intended for fun and entertainment as the add-on to xbox 360 consoles so the player won't be needing to touch or push any buttons on a controllers. A group of developers has decided to give a large sum for the first developer that could create an open source driver that would make Kinect to work on other devices. The group is now offering $3,000 (from $2,000) for the first one to crack the machine. Microsoft spent millions on the technology to make it work but now it will share the machine so that community of enthusiasts and the academic researchers alike will be able to do their experiments on Kinect. Microsoft announced that it would be releasing a non-commercial Kinect for Windows software development kit (SDK) this spring. A commercial version of the SDK will also be available at a later date. The release of the SDK will make other more useful purpose for Kinect like how a hospital is using it as a vital machine on doing surgical operations. In Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, doctors are using it to view important information from CT scans, X-rays, etc., during operation. This makes the operation time shorter time. Doctors won't have to leave the operation room just to view the scans somewhere. This cuts the time that surgeons used to sterilize themselves before and after touching the patient’s body. When they need to view something, the would wash up before going to their scan room, and sterilize again before returning to the operation. This is also lessens the risks of an open patient to infections. Around an hour is saved when doctor won't have to leave the operation room to see the scans of things. They would just have to face the the Kinect and do their navigational gestures. These are just one of the few good things that using the gaming device in other useful and meaningful way.
