Thanks to technological milestones, video gaming experience has evolved into a successful business venture and a multi-demographic source of entertainment. Video games were once was intended for kids alone but has slowly penetrated the adult market creating more jobs, profit, and room for growth. Usually change and development is good to most industries, though it can be said applicable on the video gaming industry, somewhere along the way one of the most crucial element of the engineering of consoles was taken away, and that is durability. Durability and longevity of game titles and consoles have been a great issue on the video gaming community recently. The once infamous of it is the XBOX 360 as hundreds of XBOX owners experienced the dreaded "Red Ring of Death" which makes the XBOX 360 unusable until it is fixed under warranty. This controversial technical hardware problem has caused comparison of the new hardware versus previous ones. Though it is undeniable that the audio, visual and plot presentation of these consoles is far more superior than its predecessors which is pretty normal, it's durability on the other hand is far more inferior to the previous ones. If you own a classic video game console like the Super Nintendo System, Sega Genesis System, or Atari system, given that they are in perfect working condition you will notice that they are still at their prime, working and still kicking unlike the next generation ones. This has been noticeable also in other devices like the television, refrigerators, etc. Is this the drawback behind the latest technology and engineering of certain device, a compromised system? The video game industry is a business of entertainment. Game console and title developers have a big responsibility of providing top quality products for their target market. Failure to follow such protocol will be equivalent to bad publicity and poor sale returns. So rather than just focusing on the graphical and audio presentation, portability and design of the next gen consoles they should alsoincorporate the one thing that makes classic game consoles phenomenal... durability and console life span.
