Silicon have the monopoly over electronic devices but the mere inflexibility of the semiconductor makes it impossible to be everywhere. There is a new successful research that gave birth to the first computer processor and memory chips that are made out plastic semiconductors. This gives a possibility that computing would be everywhere.

Four thousand organic or plastic transistor where used by the researcher is Europe make the first plastic microprocessor. on. It measures around 2 square centimeter and build on the top of a flexible foil. The very obvious advantage using plastic as a semiconductor is price.

The plastic chip less powerful compared to most processors these days. The processor can only run one simple program of 16 instruction. Commands are hard-coded into a second foil etched with plastic circuits which then interfaced to the processor that loads the program. It runs pretty slow at a speed of 6 hertz which is million times slower that modern machine could. Very little information could be processed - 8bit at most, well below the 128 bits from our processor these days.

Organic transistors is not new, in fact, it is already massively used in LED displays and RFID tags. It was the first time that it was used for such application when the plastic microprocessor was presented at the ISSCC in San Jose, California, February of this year.

Th processor was made out of a 25 micrometer thick sheet of flexible plastic, followed by a layer of gold electrode on top. An insulating layer follows and another layer of gold electrode and you have a plastic semicon. The transistor were created by spinning the plastic foil to spread a of organic liquid as thin and even as possible. Then the foil is heated gently, it turns to solid pentacene which a common organic semiconductor. layer of plastic were etched to make the patter for transistors.

Although researcher has successfully created the plastic microprocessor, this doesn't meant that will see this technology in the near future. But when the time it does, it would make the cost of semiconductors to be 10 times cheaper.
