High School Stereotypes: Are You One of Them?

Many parents tend to get frightened to enroll their kids in typical high schools, public or private, because of the existence of bullies and stereotypes. Their protective parental instinct automatically kicks in when they find out about their children’s vulnerability to certain perils in a normal school set-up. For these folks, they would rather send their children to exclusive schools or engage them to home schooling.

In an ordinary high school, particularly in the States, it is but normal to have certain stereotypes. This situation might have even inspired the stories behind “Glee” and “High School Musical”.

The following are the most common stereotypes in high schools:

Jocks

As depicted in Glee, the jocks are the ones who would most likely become the school bullies who love to pick on the nerds and the younger students. They are usually the most popular persons in school, along with the cheerleaders whom they prefer to go out with. Their popularity stems from their athletic and good-looking features. But sadly, they are seemingly worth no more than their “face value”.

Cheerleaders

This bunch of people is normally the school preps. They are mostly wealthy kids who can afford to buy clothes and accessories of varying brands and labels. They swagger around the school with their cliques wearing either their flashy clothes or their somewhat revealing cheerleader uniforms. Wherever they go, they cannot help but get noticed because of their gorgeous face and physique. The guys desire them, and the girls envy them. However, they are regarded as mean and dense just like the jocks.

Geeks/ Nerds

They are the opposite of jocks and cheerleaders. They always look uneasy and unattractive because of their tasteless garbs (braces, huge eyeglasses, plaid shirts and high-waisted pants) and their poor interpersonal skills. They only make friends with other geeks because they are not forced to move out of their comfort zones. They can be classified into two: the brainiacs and the gamers.

“Music” guys

These are the persons who dress and behave far from the ordinary which makes them look weird and misunderstood. Some of them are dubbed as the trouble-makers in the school. They are commonly linked with a particular genre of music. It is quite confusing whether they are inspired by the music or the music is inspired by them (or could be both). These guys can be categorized as: Goths, Punks, Emos, Grungers and Hippies.

There is nothing wrong with having a stereotype just as long as you do not confine yourself into it. You simply cannot help it if you are the jock or the nerd type. A person only needs to learn how to move outside his/her box and put into action the essence of individuality. Stereotype is a composition of personality labels and some of these labels can easily be stricken out if we wanted to.
