Geek humor is rich and quite different from mainstream humor. While mainstream humor is more interested in the way of delivery (e.g. sarcasm, dry humor, slapstick, etc.), geek humor is more interested in topics normally associated with geek culture, such as computers, gaming, comic books, and mathematics. Thus, geek humor tends not to be understood by people who do not normally identify themselves as geek. There are cases wherein certain bits of geek humor are so well-known that even those outside the geek circle could understand the jokes, but this is not always the case.

In the history of the Internet, there are a couple of web comics that tackled primarily this. Most notable among these is the web comic xkcd . Using mainly stick figures and without any recurring storyline, xkcd became a huge hit among geek humor enthusiasts because of its clever use of jargon in creating jokes. Some of the strips are not even intended at humor, but rather a more dramatic and geeky way of looking at love and life.

Then for a more straight-out example of geek humor, there's PhD Comics , which concentrates on the humor surrounding the life of a graduate school student. A good portion of the strip's lifetime has been dedicated towards the exploration of procrastination and its effects on graduate school students.

There are a lot of other manifestations of geek humor aside from comic strips. One-liners such as "There's No Place Like 127.0.0.1" has been such a huge hit that it's a popular T-shirt design even among the mainstream population. Albert Einstein's photo of himself sticking his tongue out has been the epitome real-life image of geek humor.

To an outsider, geek humor may be esoteric and it probably is. It's difficult to explain what's humorous unless they have significant understanding of the jargons used. Explaining terminologies right after a joke has been said will only make it artificial. However, to geeks like us, this is what you call making fun out of the things that you love--and doesn't that make life extra-entertaining?
