What Makes a Gamer a "Gamer"?

Thank author of this post/comment

A little while back I encountered this issue regarding how can one call himself a gamer. Details about this discussion can be read over at Why Do You Think You Deserve to be Called a Gamer?. Funny as a heated debate came after that timely microblog statement. Here is my take regarding the right to claim oneself as a gamer.

The discussion started out with a comment on how most casual gamers proudly call themselves gamers when in reality they haven't come to close of the essence of being a gamer. One does not consider casual flash gamers gamers. My contribution to that argument is by asking a question, what is the standard definition of a gamer? If only there is some sort of a standard or a right course to take before one can call himself/herself a gamer, then there shouldn't be any argument at all. Even under the gaming genre there are various subgenres that are also a source of debate and discussion: some might like RPGs while some hate it; some might prefer Western types shooters, while others may find it overrated; some might like Japanese games while other discriminate such cliched stories. In the  end one shouldn't ponder so much whether a person claims to be a gamer or not, it is their own right to call themselves whatever they like. As long as they are not interfering or tainting the name of the community then all should go on their gaming ways. I also believe that casual gamers are of a different league than the real hardcore gamers, but they are still gamers none the less. They are still valued by game publishers and developers as a market which can be seen as various games are being developed and release to attract and cater to these casual gamers.

Let me end this with this comparison: Not because a basketball enthusiast plays a basketball game on a video game console doesn't mean he is a basketball player, but still he is a basketball enthusiast nonetheless.
