In my short stay on the planet so far, I've met a lot of computer geeks who have made differing decisions with their careers. By "computer geeks," I mean those people who either have that burning passion for programing, getting deeper into computation theory, know every bit about the way their computer works, or all of the above. These are your traditional computer geeks who will, more likely than not, take up computer science in college.

An undergraduate degree in computer science is fine, but graduate school is different. Not all computer geeks that I know went through the pains of grad school, with most of them arguing them that you do not need a graduate degree in computer science if all that you wanted to be after graduation is to become a software engineer. I can't blame them. I know graduates from different fields who eventually becamse software engineers through training and experience.

As already mentioned, however, graduate school is different. It normally does not create software engineers, because that is better reserved for the company to hone. No, graduate degrees in computer science enhances the research capability of a person in the field of computation and in related discipline. It is in graduate school where many people realize the actual difference of computer science and the so-called "information technology". As we all know, graduate school is all about research and the creation of new knowledge in a given field. In computer science, there have been a couple of emerging fields particularly in robotics and machine learning. Those who are interested in cutting-edge research, which may mean less programming, are suitable for such graduate programs.

Employment prospects for graduate degree holders in computer science are abundant, too. Companies like Google, HP, and Toshiba are just some of the many companies who need graduate degree holders for their respective research departments. If you think you fit the bill and you think you can contribute something towards the enrichment of computer science knowledge, then go ahead and give it a try.
