Technology has played a major role in the improvement and convenience of how man goes on with his daily lives. From the invention of simple machines like a wheel to hybrid cars, man has made milestones after milestones of inventive discoveries. If only they are all beneficially because chances are some of these ingenuity may have various social, physical, mental, and industrial negative repercussion.

Take for instance digitizing, though it is with utmost convenient to make something so portable that you won't need to carry it around, there are industries which has started to fail the negative effects of the public's patronization to digitally converted materials. The advent of electronic books or e-books and the continuous innovation of supporting peripherals has reduced the sales and volume of people who actually visit bookstores and libraries, and why do they have to when they can just take out their e-book reader and start reading away. Though the printed media like books will never be phased out as there would always be a selected few who patronize reading and handling the actual bound print media, it is undeniable that many bookstores have already felt the blow on their sales. In order to survive these retail shops must conform with the changes which eventually means going digital themselves.

The movie rental business also feels the negative effects of digital conversion. Movie rental shops has now been replaced by various downloadable and streaming rental services which reduces the volume of people who actually visit the video rental stores to purchase CDs, DVDs and Bluray format movies and television series. With the technology of the worldwide web, consumers can now sit back and relax on their homes purchase or rent movies online via credit card and wait for the movies to be sent or loaded directly to their streaming capable device. The main justification of consumers nowadays is why would someone go to all the efforts of going to a rental store and after watching it will drive back to return it, when you can just stream or download it and let the online rental stores take it from you.

Though generally conversion to digital is beneficial and very current, industries like the video rental shop business and bookstores are the unfortunate victims of the change. They must either conform and make the necessary change or fade away in the unnoticeable darkness.
