From Modems and Routers to Modem/Routers

Thank author of this post/comment

A couple of years ago, connecting to the internet was very easy and straightforward. You just need to directly connect your desktop computer to your modem using a yellow ethernet cable and ...an instant local area connection! There were not too many fuss or complications in establishing a connection. And since most service packs have connection wizards, even a totally technologically inept person can do it just by following the step by step
procedures.

Because technology evolves rapidly, other forms of connections were introduced for the consumers. A very good example is the introduction of a wireless network connection to computers. This type of network complicated the connection and made the users expand their treasure chest of metallic devices because they needed to acquire at least one or two more electrical devices. For instance, unlike laptops, desktop computers are not really wireless capable. Users need to install wireless cards or purchase a wireless network adapter to convert their standard pc into an unstoppable wireless hogging machine. But aside from that, they also need to purchase a Wireless Router that they will connect to their existing modem so that the signal from the wires be converted to air signals and can pass through any matter.

The modem/routers were a brilliant hybrid of the two above mentioned devices. It combines the functions of the two products into one. It acts as a modem and a wireless router at the same time. It receives the DSL signal from the jack and can transmit it wirelessly. Users can still use the traditional ethernet cable connection if they opt to hardwire it straight into their devices. With the introduction of such device, people can not just connect computers to their networks but they can also connect their printers, gaming consoles and fax machines simultaneously! With the fast paced technological advancement in the world, I wonder what more devices can feasibly be fusioned together to make our lives easier, and oh, more expensive.
