Every night, most children want to hear a bedtime story before they finally doze off and enter the boundless realms of the subconscious. Such stories are a part of most people’s childhood life. Reading fairy tales and children stories is a helpful means in teaching kids different lessons and values in life.

Among all the fantasy-filled stories of princes and princesses, “The Little Mermaid” can be regarded as the most remarkable one. Somehow, when we grow past childhood, we realize how silly the other fairy tales are. Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty were all about helpless ladies who were simply waiting for a dashing prince to come and sweep them off their feet. Unlike them, the Little Mermaid had proven that she was the toughest princess of all in the entire world of fantasy. Her story deviated from the typical formula of children stories which were all about “happily ever after”. Nevertheless, its conclusion had described its own meaning of “happy ending”. This fairy tale is not a love story but rather a story of love.

“The Little Mermaid”, an 1837 story written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, is about a young mermaid who had a strong desire to become a human being because of her love for a human prince. The little mermaid showed how powerful dreams are. For so long, she yearned to see the world outside the ocean. She was very curious to explore things that are unknown to her. When she fell in love, her dreams got bigger. To have two legs and become a human, she had to sacrifice and endure a lot of things: her loss of voice, the pain of “dancing” and her life in the sea. If the prince won’t love and marry her, she would cease to exist and dissolve into foam. Even though there was no certainty that the prince will love her back, she still went on with her plan. She proved that even if the future is in haze, we have to face it with lots of courage and determination; and that dreams are not achieved without corresponding sacrifices for these are necessary to make us feel more fulfilled with our accomplishments. Sad to say, the prince fell in love with another girl. Somehow, it is not always about whether we have reached our expectations, but the process of reaching it. It’s better to take chances than never at all.

Despite what the little mermaid had done, her family still loved her so much. Her sisters traded their beautiful hairs to give her a chance in becoming a mermaid once again. However, for her to live, the prince must die. Once again, the little mermaid showed how pure her heart was. She was so selfless that she chose her own death. But destiny had its own way of rewarding the good ones. Instead of completely vanishing into thin air, she found herself in the company of the daughters of the air. All her hardships weren’t wasted. She may not have earned the prince’s love, but she may gain an immortal soul after committing good deeds for 300 years. Her fate could even inspire all the young readers; for every child’s good behavior, a year is taken off from the spirit’s length of service but if a child behaves badly, the time of the spirits would be extended. The story’s ending encourages every reader that in perseverance, a better life will follow.
