Suzanne Collins wrote a book entitled The Hunger Games which comes in trilogy. The story is set in a futuristic time and where the people are oppressed by the government,, dominated by a luxurious city called the Capitol. The plot is focused to the main character, Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year old lass who hates the Capitol and devotes herself as the breadwinner of her family. The book started with how the annual hunger games begin; separate draw lots for male and female, once a name is drawn, she will represent the district for the competition, fighting for food and better living for his/her family and own district. Katniss and her family have been living in the poorest district, District 12, and she’s been with Gale Hawthorne for everyday hunting. She volunteered in replace for her sister, Prim, whose name was first drawn for the game; while Peeta Mellark, a baker’s son, was the male counterpart of Katniss. The story also focuses on the full-of-twists love story of Katniss who is somehow torn between Peeta and Gale.

The movie adaptation of The Hunger Games Trilogy has come to its pre-production, in terms of who will play the main characters of Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne. As Lionsgate will be the front producer of the movie, careful decisions had been made as to who will take the lead roles. Jennifer Lawrence, who played as Raven Darkholme/Mystique in X-Men First Class’s post production soon to be released in June 2011 and as Ree in the 2010 award-winning movie Winter’s Bone, and a Kentucky-based actress, is the official Katniss Everdeen in the movie version of The Hunger Games. To fill in her male counterpart, Peeta Mellark’s main role was given to Josh Hutcherson, the teenager who played as Laser in the 2010 movie The Kids Are All Right. And, Katniss Everdeen’s hunting buddy and “best friend”, known as Gale Hawthorne, will be played by Liam Hemsworth, the boyfriend of one of the Hollywood’s controversial young stars, Miley Cyrus.

The casting of The Hunger Games (movie version) poses difficulty to producers. Perhaps, because of the availability of young yet talented and powerful stars who could play the roles of different characters as described by Collins in her book? Anyhow, Lionsgate should feel the challenge as to how these chosen stars will portray the important roles in Collins’s enthralling story of The Hunger Games.
