I think we could all agree the seeing things in real time is pretty great which we experience first hand with our senses like our eyes. The internet is one great piece of technology, it could supply us with massive amounts of information but the interface between reality and technology is pretty limited today. The don't combine well together.

New techniques are being developed to change how we see the world. New technologies are being created to tap that massive information of the internet and put a layer to the reality we around us. This is what augmented reality basically is.

To explain it quickly, if you have seen the Hollywood films featuring fighter jets, you'll see views from the cockpit and what the pilots see around them. Their view is also added a layer of information they need like their altitude, target, position, etc. These futuristic film are slowly becoming a reality. They are already gadgets that give the same views like those pilots. Smart phones and tablets with their camera can show you the same layer of information around you.

A typical example to explain augmented reality is if you're in someplace you're very familiar with like when you traveling. You have you smart phones equipped with the right augmenting tools, you can point your video camera to buildings to be recognized and learn things about them. Aside from seeing what is real from your screen, an extra layer of information about a place, say a restaurant, would be present to you. Another example is when shopping. With your tablet pc, you can point its camera to an item and you'll be given various information like the things you'll from the manual, it's price, or anything about it on the internet.

This kind of augmented reality need three basic things: Smart phones or other devices that will present the extra information to you; Internet connection or any data bank that will supply the information; and the Software that will it altogether...
