It would also help if your device has gps and a compass to exactly pinpoint you're location. A computer equipped with a camera could also be used in augmented reality. Holding things in front of it and see a different reality on the screen which could be more interesting and fun.

You might have already seen this technology as the marketing industry were the first few people to adopt to the technology. Some magazines print 3d bar codes on their magazine which could be viewed to their website with a web camera to see things like having people on the top of you hand. Movies and cereals promoting them used the technology to entertain people. The carton box of some cereals was printed with special pattern unlike with the magazine which used bar codes. User will be able to play games to a their website using the special pattern and see themselves in the screen with the characters in the film.

Augmented has been around but the developments of such technology is not as fast as other segments. Experts believe that the slow development is caused by people loosing interest with the technology that doesn't react that well especially from object that moves.

Computers with facial recognition application and put something like a hat or an eye patch is maybe the most common forms of augmented reality. Nintendo DSi's camera app also have same capabilities like facial recognition and adding accessories to things to face.

The promise of augmented reality has been re-lived very recently when a marketing campaign of a company showed what its capable of. Passengers in a London train station appeared to be alongside models dressed up as angels on a screen.

But perhaps the real challenge is making the digital and real world combine and work together as a part of life. As is often the way with technology, it has only been truly integrated with mass society if no-one notices it and sees it differently.

The technology need a long way to go but you have to be prepared seeing things augmented like whole cities where people could have access to information on demand rather that being entertained by it.
